Located directly adjacent to the Melbourne CBD and one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects, Docklands has grown significantly over the past decade: almost one million square metres of floor space added, tripling of resident population and quadrupling of employees.

While the number of food-related outlets per employee has grown in the CBD, the opposite has occurred in Docklands, where outlets per employee has declined over the past ten years. Retail offering is lacking in both numbers and diversity, leaving parts of Docklands with high employment density inadequately provided for during working hours and underutilised afterwards.

Docklands requires both an increase in retail, as well as more variety available past 5pm, if it is to reach its potential of being one of Australia’s most successful mixed-use urban renewal projects.
